An Allergy Sufferer Writes About Allergy Pillows

Category: Bedding, Health and Fitness

If you frequently wake up at night and find that you have a “stuffy” or “runny” nose, then you should think about purchasing an allergy pillow. Allergy pillows help to hold off the appearance of unwanted allergy symptoms, symptoms that can interrupt what should be a pleasant night’s sleep. They provide the same comfort as a conventional pillow, but they lack the irritating allergens.

While it’s nice to place a sleepy head on a soft and cushiony object, anyone who suffers with allergies must pay attention to the nature of the substance inside of that object. A cloth object that has been stuffed full of down feathers can subject a sleeper to irritating allergens. Those allergens can cause the body to react to a perceived “threat.” It then makes proteins, proteins that can fill spaces in the sinuses. The build up of mucous in the sinuses gives rise to development of a stuffy nose.

Some allergy pillows contain a substance called “Primaloft,” a down substitute. The person who rests his or head on something filled with Primaloft does not suffer from exposure to irritants. Other hypoallergenic alternatives include fillings made of wool, cotton, alpaca or latex.

Yet the effort to prevent the interruption of a sleeper’s dreams can not stop with an analysis of each pillow’s filling. Care must also be taken to avoid the presence of dust mites. Achievement of that goal can be guaranteed by acquisition of a dust mite barrier. A pillow’s cotton shell should be designed to serve as such a barrier.

Once a person’s sleeping quarters contain an object with both an acceptable filling and a suitable shell, then that location should not harbor any allergens. As a result, anyone who dozes off in that area should not need to worry about waking up to a stuffy or runny nose.
