Are Cloth Diapers Really An Alternative?
Category: Baby Items
The thought of using cloth diapers conjures up all kinds of unpleasant thoughts; but are these negative impressions realistic? Cloth diapers have become exceedingly popular in recent years, not only because of their cost savings and the fact that they are environmentally friendly – no clogging landfills with disposables that take centuries to break down, but they have drawn a lot of acceptance when Hollywood A-Listers are seen sporting the latest and greatest in cloth diapers for their little ones.
That’s right, cloth diapers are not only big business, and they have become a chic boutique item for some. That certainly doesn’t mean that you have to make a fashion statement with every diaper change, but you might be pleasantly surprised to find out how cute today’s cloth diapers are.
Not only do these fluffy and cuddly diapers come in a variety of different colors and patterns, they are also designed to be extremely comfortable and convenient. Most cloth diapers now fasten with either plastic snaps or Velcro closures which make them extremely easy to use and will completely eliminate the need for diaper pins. Because the diapers have multiple areas for adjustment, it is easy to get a cloth diaper to fit each baby perfectly, which means not only a better feeling diaper for baby, but fewer leaks as well.
There are flushable liners which can make dealing with the dirty diaper very easy, and for the heavy wetter, or for use at bedtime, there are additional inserts which can help absorb even more. Adjust the absorbency by adding the inserts as needed and you have an ideal diapering system for both baby and parents.
There are many reputable companies that offer variations on the different cloth diapers, some designs work better than others, so it is always a good idea to talk with other parents to see which diaper they prefer. In the end, however, it will come down to what works best for you and your baby. Consider starting out with a couple diapers from a few different lines in order to give each a try. Once you find the diaper that best works for your baby, you can always order more.
If you decide to try using cloth diapers, be sure that you have enough diapers to last two days, minimum. There is no sense in adding additional pressure of needing to do a load of diapers every day. Of course, you will probably want to wash every day or two, but in the event that something happens, you won’t be stuck with a pail full of dirty diapers and nothing to put on your baby. It’s always good to have a few extras on hand!
