Boat Storage
Category: Boats and Watercraft
Protecting your boat in the off-season is very important to keep it in good condition and to keep it safe. Some different types of boat storage include: keeping it parked in your driveway, keeping it in your garage or shed, keeping it in an outdoor storage facility, or keeping it in an indoor storage facility.
However you decide to store your boat, you should fit it with a properly sized boat cover. Type “boat storage covers” plus the model of your boat into Google to find appropriate covers for your model. A properly fitted boat cover will keep out rain and snow if it is stored outdoors. It will also keep out debris, large animals, and will discourage vandals. A properly fitted cover will still allow some airflow to prevent moisture from getting trapped and causing mold growth. On the subject of preventing mold, you should make sure there are no pools of water inside the boat. Siphon out any you find and wipe down all surfaces with a towel to minimize moisture. If you are storing your boat outdoors, pools of water can also be a problem if they freeze. When water freezes it expands. So if you have a pool of water in an enclosed space, when it freezes and expands it can end up causing structural damage to the boat.
Back to storage options. Storing your boat in your driveway is certainly the cheapest option but in fact many towns do not permit it. Check with your local municipal office to find out what the law is in your area. If you want to try storing your boat in your garage or shed, make sure you have enough room to walk all around the boat once it is parked. This freedom of movement will allow you to perform off-season maintenance more easily. If it is too much of a hassle to perform this maintenance then you will be tempted to skip it, and this is bad for your boat.
If you conclude that storing the boat at your home isn’t an option, you’ll need to look for a boat storage facility. Be sure to look at “RV storage” places as well as they often also store boats.
