Chinchillas live for a very long time, as to the reason that their life span typically measures for up to 15 years. This means that providing them with the right cage is very important. A chinchillas cage will basically serve as a permanent home for your pets so you should choose the best one that will make them comfortable. The first thing you need to consider in buying a cage would be your budget. Choose a pet store that sells sturdy cages for a reasonable price.

Using a glass aquarium is a total “no no” so don’t even try thinking about using one for your pet chinchillas. Using this as a cage is really not advisable as to the reason that it does not provide enough ventilation. If you have one or two chinchillas at home, an ideal size for their cage would be 24″X24″X24″. With regards to wire spacing, that needs to be at least 1 inch X ½ inch. This wire spacing measurement needs to be followed especially for kits or baby chinchillas. If you are looking at adult chinchillas, then wire spacing for their cage should not be larger that 1 inch X 1 inch.

Next, make sure that the cage you’ll be buying does not have any plastic on it. Chinchillas love chewing and placing them inside a plastic cage will easily allow them to escape. Moreover, the plastic may get stuck in the linings of their stomach and may even cause death later on. It is highly recommended that all of the parts of the cage are made from solid metal and wire. The solid metal should be used on the floor of the cage while the wire should be used for the levels and the ramps. Never buy a cage that is made with wire flooring as this may easily agitate the feet of chinchillas.

Lastly, be sure to place in some wood shavings onto the floor of your cage as to the reason that chinchillas love lying down and moving around on them. This also allows them to rest their feet. Overall, chinchilla cages look similar to guinea pigs hutches so if you don’t have any idea what they look like, think of the latter. They have some similarities especially in terms of size.
