How Serious Is Oral Cancer

Category: Health and Fitness

In order to understand the seriousness of oral cancer, we need to know what it is. Oral cancer as with any other type of cancer is an uncontrolled, foreign growth that attaches and invades the healthy natural skin or tissues.

There are sores or lesions that you may see in your mouth that are not cancerous. They usually go away in a week or two. But cancerous cells cause sores or lesions that do not go away at all. This is when you will need to seek professional help with one of the Spokane Dental Offices.  Symptoms that you may see in addition to a sore are:

  • Unexplained bleeding
  • Lumps or bumps in the mouth
  • Velvety white or red patches
  • Change in the overall mouth structure
  • Soreness that something is caught in the back of your throat
  • Dramatic weight loss

When we look at the statistics, we find that overall Oral Cancer is very serious. Here are some numbers to keep in mind. There is an 81% survival rate of 1 year. Then there is a 56% survival rate for 5-10 years, and then on from there. Keep in mind, earlier detection and treatments make all the difference. If you start to feel any of these symptoms please contact either a Spokane Dentist or Spokane Veneers Specialist.

Many times your dental professional will diagnose oral cancer at the time of regular dental checkups. This is one of the reasons that twice a year a checkup should be performed. A biopsy of anything that looks irregular will answer many questions.  When early detection is involved there is about a 90% better survival rate. Though this is a very serious illness, good oral care, proper healthy actions and regular checkups will have most people who get oral cancer, become a survivor! Please visit your dentist and local doctors if you think you have oral cancer.
