ILBE Packs Made For Marines
Category: military
Today’s Marines head into the field wearing the ILBE, or Improved Load Bearing Equipment, backpack, which was designed to replace the popular All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE) pack and the Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment (MOLLE). The MOLLE had been around since World War II, and the ALICE pack was designed to replace the MOLLE backpack during the Vietnam War. Both of the original military backpacks were found to be difficult for Marines to use once the United States became involved in battle in the Middle East.
In Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. Marines found they needed smaller packs that would be able to carry more into the field and still be comfortable to wear and easier to use than previous systems. Designers saw that the MOLLE pack was too heavy and awkward for troops to use in combat situations, and could not handle external mortar rounds, which the Marines in Iraq needed.
The ILBE pack was designed by Arc’teryx’s Law Enforcement and Armed Forces (LEAF) program, and uses a better body armor system while also allowing Marines to carry more weapons. The storage system is a Pouch Attachment Ladder System grid that allows smaller attachments to be affixed to it, much like the MOLLE and ALICE packs before it. ILBE packs consist of the main backpack, an assault pack and a hydration system, and all three components may be moved around depending upon the mission and the soldier.
Soldiers are taught that there are three main configurations of the military ILBE pack, including Assault, Approach March Load and Existence Load. In Assault Configuration, a soldier carries ammunition, water and gear needed for battle. This is the lightest possible configuration in order to allow for a greater ease of movement. The Approach March Load is heavier and meant to allow up to 90 percent readiness for combat. It is essentially used by Marines facing long periods without a means to restock supplies. Finally, the Existence Load is heaviest and used when re-stocking supplies is absolutely impossible due to climate or terrain issues.
