Important Warning Lights On Your Dashboard

Category: Automotive

As motorists we are constantly looking between the road and the dashboard. Most of the time we can ignore what’s going on in the dashboard except for our speed because our car is working fine. But in the event of a problem we need to pay close attention to the warning lights that can come on. These include warning lights for:

  • oil pressure
  • temperature
  • check engine
  • brakes
  • anti-lock braking (if we have it)
  • seat belts
  • doors that are not properly close
  • depending on your car service reminder lights: low fluid and other warning lights

All of these tell us critical information about the car. Some we can correct ourselves easily (by closing the door or fastening our seat belt for example) others warn of very serious matters indeed.

Most of these hazards speak for themselves but by way of example, let’s have a look at the oil pressure gauge in more detail. When the oil pressure gauge warning light comes on it means your car is dangerously low on oil. This can lead to your car overheating or in an extreme situation the engine can seize up, that is the moving parts can become permanently damaged or even welded together because of a lack of lubrication. This is why if the light comes on you should stop the car as soon as it is safe and if you are not sure why the light is on, call someone with more automotive experience. Never try to fix this type of problem while the engine is hot. Always wait for it to cool. It’s never a good idea to open the bonnet of a car which is overheating unless you know exactly what you are doing. When liquids are under extreme pressure caused by heat or malfunction they can rupture their containers causing boiling liquids to spray in all directions. If in doubt always seek expert advice. A good source of information about all things relating to oil is the oil pressure gauge guide blog.
