You see your dog constantly itching and scratching. After a good look over, you seen no sign of fleas or mites (mange). Can what your dog is eating cause all this discomfort?

If your dog is showing any of the following symptoms, he could very well have some dog food allergies. Some of the common symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting, excessive bad gas, recurring ear infections, and licking the front paws constantly. However, the most common dog food allergy symptom have something to do with the skin and coat. It could result in very dry skin or even a greasy coat. And it is almost always accompanied by lots of itching.

And just because your dog can’t actually tell you that all this itching is driving him crazy, it is. And what’s more, the constant scratching at the skin and coat just further stresses their immune system, which in turn, makes them itch more.  Now scratching every once in a while is fine – we all get a good itch every so often. But constant scratching, every day, every hour, just isn’t good for your dog.
Now there are other reasons other than dog food allergies that can cause intense itching, such as:

• flea allergies – some dogs can get bit by dozens of fleas and scratch for a day or two. Other dogs, who are very sensitive to flea bites, can get bit by one or two fleas and scratch for days on end.
• mange - most mange is the body’s inability to naturally correct the problem, such as stressed immune system or bad general health. Several types cause intense itching.
• atopy – also called contact dermatitis, is an allergic reaction to a substance that touches the skin, such as wool, plastic, or pesticides. Like humans, dogs can develop an allergic reaction to just about anything.
• inhalant allergies – like humans, dogs can breathe in pollen, mold, dust, etc and exhibit allergy symptoms. Whereas humans might get congested and sneeze, dogs will usually start itching like crazy.
• improper nutrition – inadequate, low quality dog food can cause a general bad health in your dog, affecting not only the skin and coat, but also the immune system (which then attacks even normal substances and treats them as allergens).

Whether your dog has a dog food allergy, or some other type of allergy, he can always benefit from a healthy dog food, such as a hypoallergenic dog food. Not only will this help to isolate whether it is a food allergy or not, special dog food for allergies will also strengthen your dog’s immune system and improve his overall state of health. This in turn will help your dog combat some of his allergies or hyper-sensitivities easier, which will hopefully help with all the endless dog itching.
