Keeping Our Pores Clean and Clear

Category: Health and Fitness, Miscellaneous

Scientists continue to debate over the intricacies of what specifically causes acne. The variables are just as different as each person that gets acne. One of the most common causes of acne is from our pores becoming clogged. The most common reason pores get clogged is because of the over production of oil from our sebaceous glands.

Sebaceous glands are located in the skin next to hair follicles. The oil is produced to help keep our skin and hair healthy. The oil helps to moisturize the skin and keep it elastic. In hair it helps to keep it from breaking and adds a protective coat. When we become stressed or are eating greasy foods, this can cause the skin to produce more oil than is necessary. Also when we use a wash cloth and rub the skin dry or our skin is not properly moisturized we can produce more oil.

With the pores filled with oil it is only a matter of time before that oil mixes with other debris. Dead skin cells that are not cleaned off daily can mix with the oil. The oil is like glue that traps anything that wanders close to the pore. This mixture becomes a plug that doesn’t let air in.

Bacteria love environments that are not full of oxygen and they feed off of the dead skin cells. The plug that sebum (oil from sebaceous glands) can cause creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. When this process starts, it is only a matter of time before that harmless plug turns into a pimple.

To prevent this process from beginning it is important to wash the face and any other affected area daily. Using a product that has benzoyl peroxide in it will help to clean out the pores. If there is any oil or dead skin cells and more importantly bacteria in the pores benzoyl can get rid of it.

A product that has benzoyl in it can tend to be a bit harsh on the skin so people with sensitive skin may just want to stick with a product that has salicylic acid instead. Salicylic acid helps to get rid of excess oil and dead skin cells that are on the skin to prevent them from clogging the pores to begin with.

Knowing that acne is caused when our pores become clogged can help you to fight it better. Before you start considering more expensive remedies such as a laser treatment, try to keep your pores clear for a month and see how much of a difference it made.
