Never Do This With A Sheet Metal Brake

A sheet metal brake is a very useful and serious tool – if you use it as such. But some people like to test the limits of anything they get their hands on, or they get lazy and try to use a tool for something it was not made to do – just because they can’t be bothered to do it right. Here are some examples of things you should never do with a sheet metal brake – unless you actually want to wreck it:
- Never use it as a vice. Let me clarify that – don’t use it to clamp something, which you will be hitting with a big hammer, painting on, welding to or something like that. Your sheet metal folder needs to have its bed and leafs in perfect working order to do its job, so if you are beating on it with a huge hammer or using an angle grinder next to it, you risk damaging the machine itself. Go to the worktable instead and put it in a proper vice.
- Never bend anything too thick in it. What the maximum thickness of material you can bend is, depends on the machine and your own physical strength – but mostly on the machine. If the sheet metal bender can not easily bend the sheet metal you want it to, with the weight of its bending leaf and attached counterweights, then you should stop trying. Getting all desperate and using too much force could result in bodily harm or tipping the brake over and dropping it on the floor. You could ruin the machine and yourself. Is that enough of a reason for you?
- Never use it to mash potatoes! Okay, jokes aside you really shouldn’t let anything near it that might make it dirty, slimy or sticky. Food and such does not belong in the shop anyway!
