Review: The Book Of Awesome
Category: Books
There are plenty of books out there that have sequels which never should have been written. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Neil Pasricha’s wonderful work, The Book of Awesome. It is a book that deserves an endless amount of sequels. Even better, admirers of the book could even write their own followup. Any positive Book of Awesome review is essentially a plea by the reviewer for Pasricha to keep writing.
The premise of the book is pretty simple: the small things in life are worth celebrating. But just because it is simple does not make it simplistic. Too often, according to Pasricha, also the founder of 1000 Awesome Things, our pursuit of the big picture causes us to forget the small pleasures along the way. The fixation on the long-view often hinders or destroys our enjoyment of the short-view.
The Book of Awesome is essentially a list of the little things that make life more satisfying. From finding loose change to sleeping in a room that is the perfect temperature, page after page encourages the reader to admit that, however bleak things may seem, there are always good things happening to us, however trivial they may seem at the time. Enough “trivial” victories will eventually lead to more substantial wins.
By slowing down and reading the book, the reader will identify more of the successes in his or her own life, which will balance out our perceived failures.
As to those infinite sequels…what I have found while reading the Book of Awesome is that the more good I notice in the world, whether big or small, the more things I am reminded of that are also good. If I focus on the positive, I develop a greater awareness of the positive around me. If I find one little thing that makes my day better, and I acknowledge it, I am more likely to find another thing.
A book that is essentially a list may not sound like a thrill ride to you, but I strongly encourage you to give The Book of Awesome a try. You have nothing to lose, but you might be surprised at how much you could gain.
