Fondant was kind of an odd word to me until I started to notice it when I looked up recipes online.  Desserts are my favorite thing to make, and Fondant Cupcake Toppers caught my fancy.  So I investigated further to see exactly what Fondant was.

Fondant is a soft, pliable, creamy preparation of sugar, water, and flavorings that is used as a basis for creating edible cake decorations.  It originated in Britain and became popular in the U.S. by those who wanted the decorations to resemble a certain look.  The fun part of fondant is that it can be tinted, twisted, shaped, and flavored into any number of decorative pieces.

You can purchase ready-made fondant or powdered fondant mix online. It can last up to a year as long as it is kept from moisture and light and needs to be placed in an airtight container.  No need to refrigerate or freeze it either. You can pour it over petit fours after you warm and thin it with a sugar syrup to make it pliable.

Some Simple Tips
•    when applying fondant to a cake, you should cool the cake at least 24 hours, covered.  This will help the cake to be more solid and easier to apply the fondant.
•    since fondant dries quickly, keep excess in plastic.
•    if it happens to get too hard, you can microwave it for a few seconds.
•    once fondant is on a cake, you can use cornstarch on your hands to smooth it out.
•    a cool room is more compliant than a warm room when applying fondant.
