Category: Animals

If your cat is pregnant, whether you like it or it just accidentally happened, the next thing you have to consider is what to do when a cat has kittens. Here are some tips to ensure that your cat will have the safest way of giving birth and how to take care of its kittens.

Weeks prior to giving birth, the mother cat will look for a place where she will be staying during the labor and the giving birth process. You can help her by giving her a good nesting location. It should be a place that is not commonly disturbed by other animals and people. It should also be comfortable for her which you can do this by laying clothed padding in the nesting place.

Usually, the cat will have several hours of labor. She will be in pain for these hours. It is obvious if the cat is in this process since she will be panting, crying and be restless all throughout. After about six hours of labor she will experience a deep contraction that is followed by giving birth of the kittens.

Do not touch the kittens or move them far from their mother. The mother will also be the one to remove the placenta from its litters. Try to avoid contact with the kittens and the cat. If all the litters are out, the mother will usually take care of her kittens.  In case that the mother neglects some of the kittens, you can help it by feeding them with milk. However, it is important to remember not to touch the kittens with bare hands. If you have children, try to keep them away from the cat and its kittens. You can also ask a vet on what to do when a cat has kittens so that they can give you instructions on how to deal with the situation.
