Anxiety is a normal reaction of people whenever they are faced with stressful and challenging situations. It is anxiety which urges people to action when a perceived negative event is about to happen. However, there are cases when anxiety becomes excessive and disruptive. It seems like an alarm that never turns off. This will then lead to an anxiety disorder. An anxiety disorder makes a person in constant fear of an impending doom. Consequently, the person’s ability to function well every day is hampered. Below is the list of the different types of anxiety disorder:
- GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) – this type of anxiety makes a person in constant excessive worry about the daily events and situations. A person with a Generalized Anxiety Disorder worries a lot about health, finances, career, family life and school. People with this type of disorder are always afraid about something which can’t be determined specifically. There are cases when they are aware that their anxiety springs from an exaggeration of negative emotions. They are always afraid about something. But, in reality there is nothing to worry about.
- Phobia – this type of an anxiety disorder is somewhat opposed to Generalized Anxiety Disorder. People with GAD are afraid about almost everything and their fears are usually not because of a particular event or object. On the other hand, people who are suffering from phobia are afraid about certain events or objects in life. They avoid those things, events or situations which they perceive as frightening at extreme lengths. They would do everything just to avoid it. Just like GAD, even if they know that there reaction is unreasonable they still can’t help themselves from being afraid.
- Social Anxiety Disorder – this is a type of anxiety disorder that makes a person live in seclusion. People who are afflicted with social anxiety disorder are afraid about being in a crowd, mingling with other people and being in front of many people. They are the type of people who can hardly endure a stage fright. Their fear stems from afraid of being judged, criticized, ridiculed, humiliated and intimidated by other people. They would prefer being alone than to suffer the consequences of being humiliated. People with social anxiety disorder would not mind missing the opportunities that they can gain from social interactions.
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – people with this type of disorder are sometimes viewed as weird people by those who do not have any idea about their real condition. It is because people with OCD are obsessed about doing something that they tend to repeat it several times. For instance, a person with OCD is obsessed about making sure that his door is locked. Hence, he will try to lock and unlock the door, check it several times within that same hour. Others are obsessed about being in a straight line always. They would make sure that they are driving in a straight direction or walk in a straight line along the road. Whenever this obsession is interrupted, it would make them feel so disturbed.
