Getting better-looking teeth are a given when it comes to dental veneers, especially those made of porcelain that are for all purposes indistinguishable from your real teeth. Dental veneers can change the most stained, crooked, and broken teeth to any set of pearly whites as flawless and gleaming as any celebrity’s, and although the cost of veneers can get rather exorbitant, most people declare it’s worth it for the boost it gives to your self-esteem and appearance. But what happens to your teeth after you get dental veneers, aside from looking better? Do they feel better, too?

Not in all cases. For people with sensitive teeth, getting dental veneers can possibly be the worst thing they can do. Before the veneer is attached to the tooth, a portion of the enamel needs to be removed. The enamel is the hard outer covering of your tooth that protects the dentin, where the nerves are directly connected. Stripping off the enamel can increase tooth sensitivity and make it extremely hard for people to enjoy cold and hot drinks and foods without cringing from the pain. People with normal strong teeth will naturally experience pain when munching on ice cubes, but that sensation can still appear on those with sensitive teeth from warm tea or semi-cool drinks.

A good cosmetic dentist will never recommend dental veneers for people with sensitive teeth, and although the removed enamel is then covered with the veneer, which is bonded in place, it still isn’t as tough as the tooth enamel. This is because all dental veneers are not indestructible; even porcelain versions, which can last twenty years, can still crack or break and have to be replaced. The cheaper composite resin veneers are also known to chip, although these can be repaired by the cosmetic dentist.

For people with sensitive teeth, the cosmetic dentist may leave the decision to you. Is it worth it possibly getting more sensitive teeth for the sake of them looking perfect? Beautiful veneers are certainly a pleasure to own and look at, but they may come at a price as to how you feel when using them.

Above all, never just rely on any cosmetic dentist to give you tooth veneers. Inexperienced and uncertified ones can give you crooked veneers that will make your mouth and facial bones feel strained and uncomfortable all the time. Ask your regular dentist if he gives dental veneers, and if not, ask his advice on where or to whom you should turn to in order to get good quality veneers.
